I just found this poem, and am dedicating it to my baby :).
After a While
By Veronica Shoffstall
After a while you learn the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul,
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning and
company doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head
up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult,
not the grief of a child,
And you learn to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans.
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if
you get too much.
So plant your own garden and decorate your own
soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring your
flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth.

So mote it be :)

Aww...my pleasure :).
do you have the author of that poem? I know I've seen it somewhere before - it's wonderful!
Here's one called "For my daughter" by Diana Der Horanessian..I wrote it down when my 32 year old was about 2...and yes, I knew right where it was (aren't you impressed?!)
I was the child who swallowed whole/
the sight of showmen eating fire,/
flying rabbits on piano wire,/
every happy ending told,/
sure that straw could spin to gold./
I grew older. Gold spun back to straw./
I learned miracles could lie/
only in the beholder's eye./
Jaded I stayed until the day I saw/
your two eyes fill with my old awe.
Here's to daughters. They rock.
Tammy!
I am impressed!
What a beautiful poem, thank you :). I printed it out for Heike Jr.
